Dental Crowns and Bridges

At our Cary dental office, dental crowns and bridges are common restorations designed to restore your oral health and give you a smile you’ll look forward to showing others. Our experienced dental team uses quality materials and the latest technology to customize your crown or bridge.

Our goal is to provide comfortable, efficient care for every patient, and we’re committed to exceeding your expectations.

What Are Dental Crowns?

A dental crown is a cap that covers your entire tooth. We use dental crowns to restore your tooth’s shape, size, and appearance.

With proper care, a dental crown can last up to 15 years or more.

Dental crowns can:

  • Prevent a cracked tooth from breaking
  • Restore a broken or damaged tooth
  • Protect a weakened tooth after root canal therapy
  • Conceal a discolored or worn tooth
  • Cover a dental implant
  • Support a dental bridge

What Are Dental Bridges?

A dental bridge replaces one or more missing teeth. We attach false teeth to your natural adjacent teeth to bridge the gap in your smile and restore your ability to bite down without difficulty.

With good oral hygiene and regular checkups, a dental bridge can last at least 15 years.

A dental bridge:

  • Fills the space where you’re missing teeth
  • Restores your ability to eat and speak properly
  • Improves your self-confidence
  • Maintains your facial shape
  • Keeps your other teeth from moving
  • Realigns your bite

The Benefits of Dental Crowns and Bridges

Dental crowns and bridges serve different purposes, but both offer significant oral health advantages and can improve your smile’s function and beauty. Here are some of the benefits of these common restorations:

Tooth Protection
A dental crown covers your decayed or weakened tooth and protects it from further damage.
Improved Aesthetics
A dental crown can conceal cosmetic concerns, including discoloration or unusual wear.
Tooth Replacement
A dental bridge can fill the gaps in your smile and keep your other teeth from shifting.
Restored Function
A dental bridge makes it possible to bite down, chew your favorite food, and speak easily.
Enhanced Appearance
A dental bridge gives you a complete smile and improves your overall appearance.
Strength and Durability
Both dental crowns and bridges are durable and long-lasting, lasting many years with proper care.

Crowns vs Bridges: Which Is Right for You?

Crowns and bridges are both good options for your smile and can give you a more functional, beautiful smile.

Here’s how to know which one is right for you:

  • We recommend a crown if your natural tooth is weakened or damaged.
  • We recommend a bridge if you have one or more missing teeth.

The Process

If you need a crown or bridge, we’ll go over your treatment plan and answer your questions before we begin.

This is what you can expect from each procedure:

Dental Crown

  1. We’ll use local anesthesia so you won’t feel anything while we remove any decay and shape your tooth to make room for the crown.
  2. Then, we’ll take impressions to send to the dental lab so they can create your custom crown.
  3. In the meantime, we’ll place a temporary crown over your tooth.
  4. About two weeks later, we’ll remove the temporary crown and bond the permanent crown onto your tooth, checking your bite and making any necessary adjustments.

Dental Bridge

  1. First, we’ll use local anesthesia to numb your mouth, and then we’ll shape your adjacent teeth to make room for the crowns that will support your bridge.
  2. Next, we’ll take impressions and use a shade guide to choose the best color for your bridge.
  3. We’ll place a temporary bridge to protect your teeth and gums until the dental lab creates your permanent bridge.
  4. You’ll come back to our office so we can remove your temporary bridge and cement your permanent bridge in place.

Frequently Asked Questions

Whether it’s dental anxiety, the cost of treatment, embarrassment about their oral health, or the time it takes to commit to a dental routine, many people avoid going to the dentist.

At Signature Smiles, we understand all of these reasons, but we’ve spoken to hundreds of patients who wish they’d acted earlier and avoided undue pain, higher costs, and serious oral health issues.

Why So Many People Wish They’d Acted Earlier

Here are the most common reasons patients feel regret about delaying treatment:

  • Increased pain — Avoiding dental care often leads to more painful issues later on.
  • Higher cost — When you wait to treat a simple concern, it can turn into a larger issue, costing you even more money.
  • Severe health concerns — If you don’t treat dental issues in time, you can lose valuable jawbone density or lose your teeth!
  • Loss of function — Missing or damaged teeth can make it impossible to chew your favorite foods or speak clearly.
  • Decreased self-confidence — An unhealthy smile could lower your self-esteem and make you avoid social situations.
